Prime Minister Examines Mopco's Factory At Damietta

Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister of Egypt, inspected Misr Fertilizer Production Company during his extensive visit to the Damietta governorate. He was accompanied by all of Eng. Tarek El-Molla, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Dr. Assem EL-Gazzar, the Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities; Lieutenant General Kamel EL-Wazir, the Minister of Transportation; Major General Hisham Amna, the Minister of Local Development; and Dr. Manal Awad, Governor of Damietta, where they were greeted by Eng. Ibrahim Mekky, the Chairman of the holding company of petrochemicals; and Eng. Ahmed Mahmoud, the Chairman and Managing Director of MOPCO.

This visit included an examination of production lines and an overview of the work process. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly listened to the explanation of Dr. Tarek El-Molla around specializations and production at the factory, which is one of the largest nitrogenous fertilizer factories in Egypt. It was noted that MOPCO was established in 1998 inside the duty-free zone and has a capital of 2.5 billion Egyptian pounds. Furthermore, it is considered a success story in the petroleum sector. The company started with one urea plant in 2008, and, thanks to diligent efforts and work, it developed into a massive complex consisting of three plants for ammonia and urea production. The annual production capacity of the complex is 1 million tons of ammonia and over two million tons of granular urea. He expressed the success story of the company, which reflects the success of the Egyptian Governorate in driving the Egyptian economy forward by attracting more investment. The company’s capital is contributed by the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company, The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, and some Arab sovereign funds. It is noted that MOPCO plays a crucial role in meeting the domestic market’s demand for urea and ammonia in cooperation with the Minister of Agriculture, in addition to exporting the remaining of the production to international markets.
Eng. Ibrahim Mekky, the Chairman of the holding company of petrochemicals, announced the company’s efforts to increase the value of its product and develop its factories though the implementation of a carbon dioxide recovery and storage project.
The project aims to increase the production capacity by 194,000 tons of urea annually. The project includes the establishment of gas recovery unit to preserve environment and reduce over 150,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually in line with global environmental standards. He explained that as the country moves towards green transition, MOPCO, as part of the climate conference (COP 28), events, signed a agreement with the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM), and the Norwegian company Scatec to establish the Damietta Green Ammonia Production company. The company aims to produce green ammonia from green hydrogen with a production capacity of up to 150,000 tons annually, utilizing the production facilities at MOPCO’S ammonia plants, and exporting the production after meeting the needs of the domestic markets.

Regarding to new projects, Eng. Ahmed Mahmoud, the Chairman and Managing Director of MOPCO, stated that the company currently studying integrated projects, including the melamine 40 project, which is considered complementary to the urea plants. The planned production capacity for this project is approximately 1,000 tons annually. He also mentioned the project for manufacturing polyethylene pipes, which aims to provide natural gas and sewage pipes to implement the government’s plan of delivering natural gas to households. Furthermore , he explained that the plastic bag factory projects aims to produce millions of bags annually to meet needs of the domestic market, sell the surplus, and export the product to Africa and Romania in varying capacities. Additionally there is a study being conducted for a compound fertilizer project in partnership with an Indian company. He emphasized the company’s role in social development, and improving the living situation for the residents of Damietta governorate.

In conclusion, The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the employees at MOPCO, expressing his wishes for success for everyone and emphasizing the company’s role in achieving social and economic development.
