The project to rehabilitate the historic Damietta Bridge has been awarded the Best Global Projects Award for 2024 by the Engineering News Record (ENR) platform. It received the award for the best global project in the restoration category. The project was funded by the Egypt Fertilizers Company (MOPCO) as part of its sustainable initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for the people of the governorate. It was not just a restoration project, but a cultural and developmental initiative that blends the preservation of history with active contributions to community development, in collaboration with the Arab Contractors Company.
The project's opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, and Engineer Ahmed Mahmoud El-Sayed, Chairman and Managing Director of MOPCO. The Damietta Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in the world, built in 1890 over the Nile River in Imbaba. Its construction coincided with the building of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and is known as the "Bridge of Civilization." It was relocated to the Damietta Governorate in 1927, and then moved again in 2007 to be placed in front of the Alexandria Library in the governorate, using the same type of equipment and iron. Restoration and rehabilitation works were carried out to restore its significant role and maximize its benefit as a historical monument registered with the Ministry of Antiquities, preparing it to be a cultural and educational hub for the people of Damietta. The bridge has now been transformed into a tourist attraction, including a conference hall, lecture spaces, art exhibitions, and the surrounding area has been repurposed to meet the needs of local citizens.
This international award is an important achievement for Egypt in the field of heritage preservation and urban development, further enhancing its status as a global cultural tourism destination. MOPCO continues its efforts to support projects that contribute to community development, reaffirming its commitment to providing an educational and cultural environment that enriches the lives of citizens and contributes to the development of Egypt's tourism and cultural sectors.
