During the activities of the Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPS) 2025, Eng. Karim Badawy, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement and memorandum of understanding between Egypt's Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) and the German company Thyssenkrupp Uhde. The event was attended by Eng. Ibrahim Meki, Chairman of the Egyptian Holding Company for Petrochemicals, and Ms. Nadia Hakanson, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Uhde. The agreement was signed by Eng. Ahmed Mahmoud El-Sayed and the General Manager of Thyssenkrupp Uhde, aiming to implement the first of its kind project in Africa and the Middle East for carbon dioxide recovery.

The project aims to enhance the efficiency of the ammonia plant and develop urea plants to produce TGU for AdBlue production, contributing to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 150,000 tons annually, with investments of $220 million. It will also improve the use of natural gas. The agreement includes conducting feasibility studies, detailed designs for the project, and providing technical support for the execution process. The project targets a 10% reduction in natural gas consumption and a 10% increase in urea production from the existing plants.

In his statement, Eng. Ahmed Mahmoud emphasized that this project is a strategic step toward improving the efficiency of MOPCO's plants and reducing their environmental impacts. He added that it aligns with the company's efforts to promote environmental sustainability and achieve its goals in reducing carbon emissions while enhancing productivity. He further noted, "We are confident that this collaboration will contribute to achieving environmental sustainability goals and will play a major role in the development of the fertilizer industry in Egypt, leading to positive outcomes in the future."
